Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden (RSABG) is the largest botanic garden dedicated exclusively to California's native plants, grounds itself with a philosophy of biodiversity and the importance of bringing real-world conservation applications to the public through horticultural education, scientific research and sales of native plants.


Overview of the Internship Program:  

This internship is designed to provide participants with the required skills to support a career in the production nursery industry. Interns work in a hands on environment to develop skills in the propagation, production, culture and care of California native plants. The nursery at RSABG implements strikt Best Management Practices (BMPs), in order to produce healthy native plants; interns are expected to learn and apply BMPs in all nursery work. Intern will also learn general nursery skills such as: watering, weeding, pest management, transplanting, maintenance and irrigation.


Skills and Experience to be Acquired:  

  • Propagation techniques used to produce a diversity of California native plants using appropriate methods including: softwood and hardwood cuttings, divisions, and seed treatments and sowing.

  • Best Management Practices, following in house guidelines to produce healthy plant material.

  • Knowledge general plant care, including transplanting, watering, weeding, pest management and fertilizing.



  • Reliability, solid work ethic, fast learner and self-starter.

  • Interest in California native plants and the production there of; knowledge desirable.

  • Interest in propagation, horticulture and nursery culture essential; experience desirable.

  • Must have excellent communication skills.

  • Computer skills including word processing, Excel, Google Drive, database management; are desirable.

  • A valid California State Driver's License.  

  • Availability to work weekends if needed.


Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of a time and walk long distances to various outdoor locations.  

  • Must be able and willing to work outside in inclement weather conditions.

  • Must be able to maneuver in narrow or confined places.

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.

  • Must be willing to work around and apply horticultural chemicals in a safe manner.
