Maintenance Worker


The Maintenace Worker performs maintenance and repair activities on mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems and equipment and performs tasks including painting, and maintenance of pathways. Strong focus on maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing facility equipment on all systems.



  • Completes repair work order requests as assigned.
  • Tightens and adjusts door closures and window locks.
  • Repairs minor electrical units, such as emergency lights, alarms, timers, vacuum cleaners, exhaust fans.
  • Possesses strong working knowledge of lubrication, bearings, belt replacement, dampers, actuators, end switches and associated rotating equipment components.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and assists with the operation and repair of all HVAC, electrical, generators and other mechanical systems and/or general building/facilities maintenance.
  • Performs general and preventative maintenance and repair of Garden Fleet vehicles including trucks and utility carts.
  • Opens clogged toilets and drains, and repairs leaking plumbing fixtures.
  • Reports all problems that may require specialty trade(s) attention to supervisor.
  • Does minor carpentry such as installing and repairing doors, cabinets and furniture.
  • Does minor painting and water seal of buildings.
  • Conducts periodic inspections of mechanical, common and vacant spaces and appurtenances; maintains these areas in a clean, operational, orderly, and safe condition.
  • Participates in emergency response activities.
  • Must wear a two-way radio or cell-phone during the performance of duties.
  • Services small power tools as needed (blowers, mowers, chainsaw, augers, etc).
  • Takes care and custody of issued tools and equipment and assists with the maintenance and organization of tools, parts, and supplies inventories.
  • Ensures that required documentation, operating logs, and maintenance forms are completed accurately and clearly and are maintained in paper files.
  • Assists in setup and tear down for Special Events and/or Exhibits in the Garden, as needed.
  • Performs routine and emergency repairs and maintenance, both scheduled and in response to emergency situations, as required.
  • Performs other essential duties and completes special tasks/projects as assigned; and carries out all tasks assigned by managers and supervisors in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and accident free workplace and exercises common sense and good judgement when performing duties.        


Individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Must possess knowledge of electrical, plumbing, painting, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to understand written and oral instructions in English.  Must be able to read manuals and troubleshoot problems.
  • Must possess knowledge of safe operation and use of tools and equipment,

working methods and procedures.

  • Ability to make repairs to building systems and components using regular and special tools (e.g. screwdrivers, hammers, adjustment gauges, multi-meters, lubrication equipment, etc.).
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, climb, push, pull, stoop, twist, stretch, and lift up to 50 lbs. from ground to waist level without assistance, climb ladders up to 20 feet with assistance and up to 10 feet unassisted, and able to work on feet for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain cooperative relationships.
  • Must be able to drive.
  • Must recognize limitations of time and skill to request assistance when needed.
  • Must be able to do basic arithmetic computations.



High school graduation or equivalent. Three to five years related experienceExperience in private or public educational facility preferred.


Must have drivers license and a driving record acceptable to theGarden’s automobile insurer.

Ability to maintain good concentration level while dealing with interruptions; attention to details with emphasis on accuracy; capable of giving, receiving, and analyzing information, formulating work plans, and articulating goals and action plans. 

Sitting in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.  Standing for extended periods of time. Reaching and extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.  Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than the whole hand(s), or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.  Communication skills using the spoken word. Ability to see within normal parameters.  Ability to hear within normal parameters.  Ability to bend and stoop, for example, to file.  Ability to move about.  Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs for short distances, for example to lift or move office supplies, files, books and packages
