Position Overview
Grow Native Nursery in the Veterans Garden is seeking an energetic native plant enthusiast. The ideal candidate will have great interpersonal skills and an infectious personality backed by horticultural knowledge and the ability to sell plants. The Sales Associate will work at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden’s retail nursery Grow Native Nursery in the Veterans Garden located on the VA campus in West Los Angeles.
 
Duties and Responsibilities
The Sales Associate is primarily responsible for customer service which includes, but is not limited to, assisting customers with plant selections, placing special orders, informing customers of specials and upcoming events, responding to customer emails and phone calls, and helping to identifying plant material and to diagnose plant disease, as well as trouble shoot design problems. The incumbent will work closely with the Nursery Manager to ensure staff coverage for the GNN-VG, to maintain inventory of nursery stock, to provide plant care to ensure high quality stock, and to order plants (both from the production unit of RSABG and external sources). The Sales Associate will assist in keeping the nursery fully stocked of plant material, hard goods, and general supplies. The sales associate will coordinate with the Retail Nursery Manager to create and maintain nursery displays, and ensure that all nursery material is properly signed and priced.
 
-Provides excellent customer service (answer questions about plant selections, design, care and maintenance as well as product information)
-Ability to work closely with and aid in supervising part-time veteran employees participating in job-training program.
-Nursery work geared toward plant care and appearance of the retail sales area (watering, labeling, pruning, weeding, cleaning, organizing plant display tables, creating new sales displays, maintaining nursery signage, general clean-up)
-Grounds maintenance (watering, planting, pruning, pest control, general clean-up)
-Assists manager with taking and posting monthly inventory
 
Qualifications
-Must have retail sales experience.
-Must have good communication and organizational skills; basic math skills necessary
-Must have good attendance record in previous positions
-Must be available to work weekends and holidays
-Knowledge of California native plants and their horticultural requirements ideal; willingness and demonstrated ability to learn rapidly required
-Associates level degree in horticulture or in another plant science and/or demonstrated hands on experience ideally in nursery work
 
Physical Demands
-Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and walk long distances to various outdoor locations
-Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
-Must be willing to work outside in inclement weather conditions
-Must be willing to work weekends
